LFI enables key – and often diverse - actors to come together and build a common strategy based on complementarity of capacities and reciprocity.
Land Rights is integral for people’s survival and sustainability. Under this theme, LFI generate evidences and support the land defenders and build their capacities and extend a platform to multi-stakeholders to draft and promote land and related laws and policy formulation.
Facilitate and support rural and tribal women and men to assert people centered provisions of forest rights laws and policies, gain rights over their forest and its by-products.
Mobilise and capacitate national, state and local leaders on rights of communities, especially pastoral women and men and other dependent communities over commons, on pastures and commons land, and to engage on policy matters.
Develop models of sustainable agriculture to ensure food security for small and marginal farmers with a focus on women farmers, to upscale these models and engage with policy issues regarding agriculture.
Land Forum India, also known as ‘NES’(National Engagement Strategies) is the coalition of the actors working on land rights with an approach of People Centered Land Governance.
LFI was formed by International Land Coalition. A global coalition of 206 intergovernmental and civil society organisations formed to promote secure access to land for the rural poor. ILC membership comprises some of the major UN agencies and financial institutions, renowned CGIAR centres and a number of major independent think tank organisations. The majority of ILC members are civil society and farmer organisations from the South.
Land Forum India (LFI) is a consultative platform that brings together LFI India members and other stakeholders with a medium-long term perspective, in order to engage with the communities dependent on land, civil society, bureaucrats and policy makers for ensuring people centered land governance. LFI enables key – and often diverse – actors to come together and build a common strategy based on complementary of capacities and reciprocity. The establishment of a national multi-stakeholder platform accelerates the likelihood of results, enables effectiveness and efficacy of action, and provides a constructive space for action where diverse perspectives can be assimilated. LFI focuses on following priority areas for action:
This theme aims to strengthen processes for access, control, and governance of common property rights by local institutions and communities. This includes resources such as common and water land, mountains, pastureland, forest land, and wasteland. The action plan entails capacity building of members and allies, mapping data for advocacy purposes, engaging in policy advocacy on commons, and conducting consultations and developing strategies related to forest rights.
The theme of climate change focuses on understanding the impact of climate change on communities, natural resources, and agriculture. The action plan includes conducting studies to assess the impact in respective areas, increasing awareness through training and capacity building, engaging in advocacy efforts, promoting climate-resilient crops and indigenous solutions, planting valuable trees in Common areas, converging with government schemes, and participating in fact-finding initiatives related to the climate Crisis.
This theme aims to address challenges such as climate change, encroachment, soil degradation, and migration. The goal is to enhance livelihoods by ensuring food security, fodder security, climate-resilient agriculture, social security, and the promotion of traditional practices. The action plan involves conducting evidence based studies, understanding the ecology and economy, promoting multi-cropping, analyzing policies, regenerating common land, and engaging in advocacy efforts to collaborate with the government.
LFI is a multi-stakeholder platform, having members from diverse backgrounds. They engage with complex and rapidly changing realities and play a crucial role in bringing changes in practices and behaviors; policies and agenda, through collaborating with affected communities, civil society and state.
The overarching goal is to influence policies and obtaining land reform that allow women and men to build a secure and dignified future.
LFI is a multi-stakeholder platform which includes all those like minded Organisations / Institutions / Agencies who are committed towards people centered land governance. The members bring diversity of issues, perspectives, approaches and strategies The co-ordination mechanism includes Steering Committee (SC) and Secretariat. SC is responsible for strengthening LFI and Secretariat ensures smooth functioning and well co-ordinated actions of LFI. Component Leads are responsible for providing guidance and direction towards respective themes. ILC has promoted NES India / LFI and is closely connected with it.
